A veteran of the Whole Earth publications, Mills has written scores of essays, reviews, and articles appearing in publications from Resurgence and Orion to The Britannica Book of the Year, as well as in numerous anthologies. She has produced seven books, including Epicurean Simplicity, Turning Away from Technology, In Service of the Wild, and On Gandhi’s Path: Bob Swann’s Work for Peace and Community Economics.
Throughout her career Mills has spoken widely. She has delivered two E.F. Schumacher Society Lectures, and given remarks at podia ranging from the Harvard School of Design to the Yale School of Forestry, and Grace Cathedral in San Francisco as well as countless informal talks at bioregional gatherings and keynotes at various ecology conferences.
Mills was named one of the world’s leading visionaries by Utne Reader in 1996. She is one of nine environmentalists featured in Earth Days, a 2009 PBS documentary on the start of the U.S. environmental movement. She was awarded an honorary doctorate In 2009 by her alma mater, Mills College (no relation). Active in her community, Mills helped launch Bay Bucks, a local currency. She is a Fellow of the Post Carbon Institute.
